Yishai (Ishi) Ron

Israeli Novelist

"Terrible and wonderful, heartbreaking and heartfelt-if literature has any hope of making us better people, it will be through the brutal, beautiful honesty of works like Ishi Ron's remarkable Dog." —Shalom Auslander

"Yishay Ron's gripping, haunting Dog performs the magic act that all novelists seek." — Thane Rosenbaum

Yishay Ishi Ron is an award-winning Israeli author, a former elite combat soldier, and a survivor of severe PTSD.  Writing has been an essential part of his healing journey, enabling him to transform deeply personal wounds into stories of trauma, resilience, and redemption.

Ishi's novel Dog is a searing and powerful work of literary fiction that confronts the invisible scars of war. With his unique background as both a soldier and a psychology graduate, Ron brings authenticity and profound psychological depth to his storytelling, making Dog  both intensely personal and universally resonant. The Hebrew edition was long-listed for the Sapir Prize, Israel’s most prestigious literary award, and the novel went on to win two National Jewish Book Awards in the United States. It was also recommended by the National Library of Israel as one of the most important contemporary works on post-trauma. Dog is being made into a feature film by celebrated filmmaker Eran Riklis, who was struck by the novel’s emotional force.

Ron’s second novel, The Girl Who Rode the White Lion, is a sweeping historical narrative inspired by true events.  The novel moves from Nazi Germany to 1950s New York and Tel Aviv, following the extraordinary story of a young girl who escapes an SS officer by joining a traveling circus.

Ron’s previous works in Hebrew include Holiday Apocalypse, which was nominated for the Geffen Award, and Vincent’s Nose, a children’s book that was adapted into an award-winning play. Across genres, his writing continues to explore the fragile boundary between suffering and survival, silence and voice, despair and imagination.
